La Cotte

Client: Societe Jeriaise
Project type: Stabilisation of Archaeological Site
Key Roles: Project Manager, HSPC
Sectors: Heritage
Location: St Brelade, Jersey

Description:
On the south west coast of Jersey, lies La Cotte (meaning the cave in Jèrriais), a Palaeolithic site of early inhabitation. The area is of huge importance, artefacts found there indicate an immense time span of nearly 200,000 years and it has produced more Neanderthal tools than the rest of the British Isles put together.

Experts believe there is much more to be recovered from the site (as much 60%) offering unparalleled research opportunities, lying within deposits behind the collapsed entrance. However much of the site lies unprotected, at the mercy of the powerful Atlantic elements; the severe storms of winter 2013/14 destabilized important archaeological deposits and necessitated the decision to carry out stabilisation works.

Rowney Sharman were then appointed to manage the tender process, advise on management structure between the various consultants and contractors, provide contractual advice and implement health and safety measures, with the aim of creating safe access and preserving the site for future research.
