Key Roles: Client Representative, Project Manager

Location: St Helier, Jersey

Description:
This project formed one of the Jersey Future Hospital enabling schemes and reflected the client’s aim of creating a healthcare campus model, separating ambulatory / outpatient services from inpatient acute services in the main hospital. Accommodating selected outpatient clinics displaced from the main hospital into a new building on the site of the former junior doctor’s residence at Westaway court would create more efficient use of available accommodation, along with freeing up space on the main hospital site for the phased Future Hospital development.

Offices would also be provided for consultants and medical secretaries, some on a temporary basis until the repurposed granite block would provide a permanent location at the end of the Future Hospital project.

The project required the demolition of existing buildings including a 9-storey tower block within a built up quarter of St Helier to make way for the construction of the new 4 storey building. Public areas for each floor included reception, concourse, welfare facilities, circulation areas and a variety of treatment and consultation rooms. Staff areas would be provisioned with offices, team hubs, staff changing and rest rooms. The design brief for the new building was to create an atmosphere of ‘wellness’ making use of colour, acoustics, space and light, as well as aiming for an environmental accreditation of ‘excellence’ from BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method).

In our capacity as project managers we oversaw the demolition planning application and tendering processes. As client representative we managed significant user and clinical engagements including facilitating the transition to a revised brief mid-way through the design phase.

The project reached RIBA stage 2 before the decision by the Government of Jersey not to progress with the Future Hospital development resulted in its cessation.
