Millennium Town Park

Client: Government of Jersey
Project type: Regeneration of urban area to create a town park
Size: 13,000 m2 (135,000 ft2)
Key Roles: Project Manager
Sectors: Leisure, Heritage
Location: St Helier, Jersey

Description:

The regeneration of an area of St Helier to build a new park on a former gas works site was the result of 13 years petitioning by local people. ‘Town Centre North’ has the highest residential density in St Helier.

The biggest obstacle to the development was the detoxification of the contaminated ground from this former industrial site. Most soil was shipped off to be treated for reuse in Holland and the whole site was then being capped to ensure that any residue contamination would not affect park users. The space was then landscaped to provide a children’s playground, sports and Petanque pitches, granite benches, footpaths, a kiosk, toilets, water features and sculptures by local artists.

In our role as Project Manager we the managed the procurement process, developed project programme, scheduled and chaired progress meetings, monitored costs and reported back to the client. We were responsible for co-ordinating consultations between the client, the contractor and the professional team, ensuring that the correct information was disseminated to allow the progress of this extremely fast-track project.

Completed in 2011 the park is now used daily and has proved extremely popular as a community focal point, likely to be enjoyed by islanders for generations to come.
