Description:

The limited capacity of the Jersey Hospice to respond to the needs of its patients, bereaved clients and those anticipated in future years led to the decision to develop a new facility on the existing site at Clarkson House. This project saw the development of adjoining land to provide a new larger care and community support facility; fully integrated with the existing Hospice.

The redevelopment programme consisted of the following new build and refurbishment projects, carried out over a 4 year period:

  • New In-Patient Unit

  • New Day Hospice

  • Clarkson House Extension

  • Clarkson House Refurbishment

  • Landscaping & Car Parking

  • Education Centre

As the appointed client representative and project manager, we developed the full project delivery strategy, overseeing the integration of the construction and migration programmes while minimising the impact on the Hospice’s daily operations. Other challenges included the management of specification changes, inevitable in an evolving healthcare sector over the four year plan. We fulfilled the client’s aim of creating a culture of engagement and inclusion, ensuring that patients and staff were fully involved in the design process, resulting in a programme that fully reflected their vision, future aspirations as well as the clinical requirements of the new Hospice. From the outset this provided a feeling of ownership with the whole Hospice team, including the professional and construction teams giving everyone a sense of pride for playing a part in the project’s delivery.

“We are delighted with the level of service provided by Rowney Sharman. It is obvious that they consider themselves simply as an extension of the Hospice team. They have fully understood all the challenges facing us, determined by the very nature of what we do in terms of fundraising and providing care and they have worked well, not only with all the staff but also with the Board of Trustees, to ensure that expectations are met”
