Energy from Waste facility

Client: Government of Jersey
Project type: New incinerator plant with electricity generation
Key Roles: HSPC
Sectors: Industrial, Government
Location: St Helier, Jersey

Description:
Contributing to the island’s power requirements, the Energy from Waste Facility completed in 2011, generates electricity from the incineration of up to 80,000 tonnes of household and agricultural waste.

An industrial plant of this scale requires stringent health and safety measures incorporated into its design. In our role as Health and Safety Project Coordinator we ensured that the works remained compliant with the requirements of the ‘Management in Construction (Jersey) Regulations 2016’. In this role we oversaw the safe removal of asbestos from landfill pits on the site and the use of explosives to blast the granite bedrock to form the foundations; the risk heightened with the island’s fuel farm only 100m away.
