Description:

The property formerly known as the ‘Forrester’s Inn’ is a Grade 4 Listed Building and was reportedly the oldest licenced pub in the Channel Islands (since 1717) until it closed for Business in 2015. The client’s vision to transform this historic building into a sophisticated and stylish new venue was achieved through a collaborative approach with the project team, ensuring the successful delivery of this outstanding restoration project.

The redevelopment was extensive and complex, requiring the demolition of various structures and the construction of a single storey extension in the landlocked area to the rear to form the new restaurant and kitchen.
As a grade 4 listed building there was a requirement to retain and preserve as much of the original fabric as possible, although the 1970’s windows were replaced with more authentic style timber frames. In keeping with historic style of the pub, a thatched roof was installed, to mirror the original 18th century finish.

Also included in the scope were the alterations to the entrance façade, lowering of the roadside ground levels to provide a sunken external seating area, a large modern kitchen to serve the restaurant, and staff accommodation on 2 floors above the pub.

From the outset the combination of refurbishing a listed pub with creating a new extension into a landlocked enclave site provided for a challenging project; soon becoming apparent that the age, condition and physical location of the original ‘Forrester’s Arms’ posed more difficulties than had originally been anticipated. Fundamental to the successful delivery of this project was the creation of an open approach to joint problem solving and risk mitigation management. In our role as clients project manager we successfully coordinated the integration of specialist interior design, architectural, structural, services and state of the art information technology to create a highly functional space while retaining original authenticity. We developed the project programme and took responsibility for resequencing works when problems evolved, all the while keeping focussed on the established opening date of the new business.
